Once the domain of preteen boys, they’re now being read by everyone from housewives to yuppies; movie spinoffs such as the summer blockbuster X-Men are raking in the bucks, and there's even plans for a Spider-Man flick starring Tobey Maguire as the Webbed crusader. Independent comics are finally gaining critical respect. Here’s how to find out about the fascinating world of comics today.
Check out The Comics Archives for information about classic comics from the '30s to the '50s. For up-to-date industry news, try The New Comics Release List; in addition to upcoming titles, it's got a great collection of links to news and reviews.
The two largest comics manufacturers both have significant online presences. The Marvel Universe site offers company news, information on various titles and previews of upcoming issues; its AOL counterpart (Keyword: Marvel) goes even further, with trivia contests, chat sessions and an online-only Spiderman "cyber-comic."
The website of archrival DC Comics throws in an online newsletter and submission guidelines. At the company’s AOL channel (Keyword: DC Comics) you’ll find guides to characters and titles, as well as chat rooms and message boards.
