Super-Cheap Travel
| Overall Rating | No Ratings |
For a lot of us, staying at a Hilton or flying first-class isn’t really an option -- in fact, we have trouble scraping up bus fare. Just because you’re a starving student (or a penny-pinching grown-up) doesn’t mean you can’t travel -- it just means you have to plan your trip a bit more carefully. The Internet’s chock-full of tips for traveling super-cheap; here’s where to look.Cheap Travel
Even if you’re not a British student, the United Kingdom’s Campus Travel site is still a great place to turn for super-cheap travel tips. It has descriptions of
a bunch of different discount rail and air services, information on travel visas and vaccinations, a notice board for getting in touch with fellow travelers and much more.
If it’s super-cheap air travel you’re looking for, consider trying to get a flight as a courier. The Air Courier Association’s home page offers instructions on becoming a courier, as well as a guide to various fares and destinations.
And for the truly poor (and criminally stupid), there’s always train-hopping. Learn some tips on this dangerous (and illegal) adventure sport at Adventuring by Wes Modes; you’ll find detailed instructions on hopping trains, as well as a collection of articles by people who have done so. Also check out this collection of train-hopping-oriented newsgroup postings.
Of course, the cheapest mode of transportation is your own two feet. If you’re planning on using them to get around for your next trip, Walking in Europe and Izon’s Backpacker News Wire have plenty of hints and tips.
Cheap Lodging
If you don’t want to shell out the bucks for a hotel, youth hostels can be an affordable, safe and sanitary option -- particularly in Europe. At The Internet Guide to Hostelling, you’ll find a giant database of hostels around the globe, as well as news from the hostel industry, a "guide to guidebooks," and much more.
