Software social (social software) or social applications (which are found in abundance on the Web), allow a discussion in real time or asynchronously. Moreover, these software or applications can exchange or share information (photos, videos, documents). The blogs, wikis, e-mail, online games and chat software (chat) are regarded as social software (according to Wikipedia). Why use social software? According to Wikipedia, social software facilitate group communication, construction of social ties, collaborative work, play a more collective creation, and all of this, organized around Web tools.
The Wikis for example, are free tools that allow a group to work and collaborate on documents common, accessible at any time on the Web.
It is therefore easy for people from various regions to work together, from home, on a Web space, which can be public or private (for members of the group). The service Google documents is also an alternative to a collaboration of joint documents. Moreover, these tools do not require computer knowledge. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, here’s a video (in English), discovered at Francis, who sums up what the wiki
Social Network
We all have a social network. Whether at work or friends, often to get something through our network. The Internet can now expand our global network so! And it is simply wonderful. Thanks to my blog, I discovered a large number of stakeholders in education from which I learn a lot. These players live in New Brunswick, Quebec, the United States and Europe! I read and comment regularly blogs, which allows me to think and learn about subjects that fascinate me, like education.
The use of social networks differs from the children and adults. That is why so many adults fear their use. Too many children are left alone in this virtual world. Among young people, social networks such as MSN, MSN Space, MySpace, Facebook, Flickr, Piczo, and I forget many, are widely used. Although used? Not always! I like this passage of this bill Mathieu:
Finally, I return to the fact that it is important to know Facebook and other similar services in order to educate our young people on issues such sites. I often teachers say that students know much more than they on technologies, especially in regards to the Internet. True, most of the time, but that is not the issue. If they have the knowledge and means to use the Internet to find, “remix”, create, publish and share content, they rarely aware of the ethical, legal, personal and social to do so. This is where adults must intervene, and no knowledge or skills in computer science to do so. After all, I have never consumed drugs (from the coffee …) and I can still educate my students on the topic
Education is always the best means of prevention. We must educate young people about the use of these services. Personally, I use several of these services. I do not between social insurance number, credit card number, home address or telephone number. I do not use photos or videos compromising. I do not vulgar language or hate speech. It is on these issues that young people need education and awareness of the dangers of such exchanges of information!
What I use and why
My Blog: Obviously, my blog is the social software that I use most. It allows me among other things, to broaden my social network! This tool allows me to share with others who have the same interests as me. Moreover, it allows me to reflect on my practice and have interesting discussions with people who share or not my point of view!
MSN Messenger: I use this service to maintain contact with friends who do not live my region. Besides, I use “voice conversation with my wife when I’m elsewhere in the province or outside the province. This service is as effective as the telephone and most importantly, no fee intercity!
Ipernity: This service is a service of photos online, very similar to Flickr. The advantage is that the interface is in french. Moreover, it allows you to store photos, video, audio files and documents. Why would someone want to share these files? Accessibility, because these files are available anywhere, on any computer with an Internet connection. Sharing. As can be given a license Creative Common our files, they are still protected by copyright where I allow non-commercial use. So, my photos of Paris, for example, can be used by other teachers to show various monuments!
Wiki: I have not yet had the opportunity to use this tool to its full potential. But next year I’ll be back in the classroom. Of course, my class will have a wiki to allow collaboration and co-construction of learning.
Website video storage: Several videos storage sites exist, the most popular is probably “You Tube”. For my part I use Dailymotion because it offers an interface to french. Why use a storage site video? Firstly for space. Video files take much space on a hard drive. The warehousing services keep video files for free. Moreover, they provide, for the most part, a public service or private. The second reason for using this service, is being able to publish these videos directly on a blog or a website, and hear from this video blog or website (as an example in this ticket).Netvibes: It is a Web 2.0 service. Nevertheless, it can follow, from a single page, all sites that have an RSS feed. For me, this is an indispensable!
FaceBook: This service, which is really a social network, which keeps contact with friends. But it offers much more! I suggest these two tickets Mathieu, here and there, to learn more about FaceBook…
Obviously, I use other services. But those I listed above, are services that I use every day. Some are used in a school setting, others purely for pleasure. It is important to recognize the existence of these services. Students use them widely, and too often without adequate supervision! These services are born at an exponential rate on the Web! It is important not close our eyes, and learn about the functions and relevance of these applications.
The discussion
1Excellent ticket! I have heard good things about Netvibes but I have not yet taken the time to try it.
Personally, I use Bloglines that I could not move me.
There is also a program which I am the development closely: Flock. It is a web browser based on Firefox, which integrates so impressive about all software and social networks. It’s worth a look but it is still far to replace my good old Firefox!
