Online Art Galleries

Can’t make it to Museum of Modern Art this year? Too bad, because you'll miss the Graphic-Photographic and Useless Science Exhibits. Luckily, the Internet can be your own personal gallery to discover famous artworks, from modern art to classic portraits. Granted, a graphic on your computer screen isn’t quite as impressive as a six-foot-tall canvas, but it’s a lot cheaper, and you won’t have to deal with pesky security guards. Websites for Art Museums Start your search for great art online at the myriad official websites of the big-name art museums. Some of our favorites include the

sites for New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, the British Museum, and the directories to the Museums of Paris and Russian Museums. For links to hundreds of art museum sites, check out The WWW Virtual Library’s Art Galleries Section. Online Only There are a number of online-only art galleries, too -- unfortunately, most of them feature artists who aren’t exactly, um, good. Your best bet is The Greatest Painters on the Web, which offers links to websites for dozens of great artists. The Artist of the Month Page is also worth a look; it provides a comprehensive collection of links to a different artist every month. On the Fringe What's our favorite online art gallery? webcomicsreview.com As the name implies, it’s a collection of some of the most horrible things ever put on canvas -- crudely drawn cowboys, weird-looking clowns, the works.
