Internet, Website Design
Whether you want to make a professional-looking website or just create snazzy party invitations, Adobe’s Photoshop is a powerful design program, enabling you to, among other things, manipulate existing images, create original artwork, and experiment with type. Learning Photoshop is not complicated, but there is a lot to know. Fortunately, there are plenty of places for novices and advanced users to improve their Photoshop skills online.
Basics
If you are still using the 3.0 version of Photoshop (5.0 is the most current version) or you just want to learn the basics, the Rice University Photoshop Tutorial is a good place to start. The tutorial covers everything from importing and saving images to color to using layers (an important thing to know about using Photoshop).
Andy’s Photoshop Tips range from the beginner to the advanced. New users will appreciate the explanation of the Photoshop toolbar and the short tutorial on how to create simple objects.
Tips For Experienced Users
Joel’s Photoshop Stuff is probably useful for the experienced Photoshop user. It covers things such as drop shadows, fades, image editing, and using brushes.
The Photoshop Tip of the Week page features a new tidbit -- you guessed it -- every week. Recent tips include using masks, controlling density, and sharpening images you have scanned.
Cooltype is a design-oriented site that has dozens of Photoshop tips and tricks for the experienced user. Learn how to do things such as create polka dots, make a jigsaw-puzzle effect, make a water reflection, simulate a fire, or even dirty snow.
Photoshop Reference
Adobe’s Photoshop Get Help site has Q&As, support databases, user forums, and more. There is no tutorial on the site, but if you already know the basics of Photoshop and you have a specific question, you should be able to find the answer here.
The National Association of Photoshop Professionals doesn’t offer an online course but there is information about the Adobe Photoshop Seminar Tour, which travels around the country offering classes in the program. The site also features a help desk and job bank for members (membership costs $99).
