Macromedia just launched version 2.0 of its Dreamweaver Web-authoring software. Dreamweaver was introduced last year, and is a favorite of seasoned Internet pros who like it for its ease of use and its strong DHTML and animation capabilities. Beginning Web developers interested in trying out a Web-authoring package could probably figure out Dreamweaver but may want to start out with a less advanced program, such as Microsoft’s Front Page.
What the Critics Say
In its most recent roundup of WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) HTML editors, Builder.com awarded Dreamweaver 1.2 (the version before 2.0) the editor’s choice. The editors were impressed by the way the program handled like a professional design tool and its advanced DHTML and FTP features.
PC Magazine’s review also commends Dreamweaver for its DHTML, as well as its Cascading Style Sheet features, but urges novice Web builders to stick with simpler (and cheaper) Web-authoring packages.

Macromedia offers a free (well, with a $14.99 shipping and handling fee) Web Design 101 CD-ROM tutorial that includes trial versions of the company’s Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash, and Freehand products. The CD-ROM can be ordered here or by calling 1-800-457-1774.
Dreamweaver 2 can be purchased at the company’s website for $299 (or for $129 as an upgrade for 1.2 users).
