Three engineers announced Sunday the opening of a new search engine called Cuil (pronounced “cool”), whose index would amount to 120 billion Web pages, compared to 40 billion claimed by Google links. The founders of Cuil, who believe they may be able to index faster and cheaper deep Web, also claim to be able to establish classification algorithms taking into account the context of each page to better decide what are the results must be brought to the fore. At the root of Cuil are Tom Costello, the origin of the first semantic search engine developed at IBM, accompanied by his wife, Anna Patterson, who was once the architect of the tool indexing Tear Google, deployed on the data centers of the Mountain View firm since 2006. Launched in 2005, the company has a capital of 33 million, obtained at two fundraising.
